Message From the Chairperson

The end of 2008 was a great end for the Academy, we were given Club Mark status, being accredited with ‘Volley 1’ by the English Volleyball Association. Club mark helped us establish, manage and oversee the implementation of good practice across all areas of the volleyball game from child protection to our playing programme.

The implementation of the Club Mark protocol although lengthy and time consuming has really seen our club and its structure grow. We now have 13 qualified coaches and eight qualified referees. Ruth Lovell has been included in the EVA coach development programme as one of only eight coaches from the South West. We now have regular leagues for Under 14 and Over 14, as well as the newly created North Devon Super Series, 9 competitions over the course of the year 6 indoors and 3 on the beach for 6-a-side teams.

2009 will be a land mark in steering new coaches into the club as we will see our year 13’s ‘graduate’ and head out of North Devon into other Clubs, Colleges and Universities. The Academy aims to support financially and practically any member who wishes to learn to teach the game for anyone who interested. The Sports Coach UK, UK Coaching Certificate has been introduced in 2009 by the EVA and the Academy aims to become a Recognised Centre to aid in the delivery of Level 1 coaching courses. As well it was a landmark year for me, Denise Austin, as I qualified as a level 1 Staff Tutor along with my Beach Volleyball Staff Tutor status, it enables us to sustain and grow with coaching numbers as well as participants.

Our players and teams have represented in regional and national indoor and beach competitions, with our youngest team the Academy Leapers of Alfie and Harry Constable, Ellie Austin and Charlie Greenway competing for the first time in a SW Junior Grand Prix event. Another landmark achievement was Jack Walker and Ashley Yeo who won the SW U18 Beach Volleyball Championships in 2008 at Exmouth Beach.

The newest and youngest member is Immy Lang at age 5 and our oldest member is Phil Gilbert who has taken up the game alongside his daughter Amy. They are one of 15 families with either siblings or parent and child members. Our official member count at the end of 2008 is 140. Spread across North Devon from Lee Bay to Shebbear. Our ratio is 69 male and 71 female members.

2009 looks like a promising year for volleyball and beach volleyball in North Devon. I would like to take this opportunity to thank all of the members for your support and participation this past year. Good luck with your sport, your continued enjoyment and competitions either coaching, refereeing or as players.
