THE Academy of Beach Sports have made it 12 National Volleyball League wins in a row.

The North Devon side remain top of Division Three South West, four points ahead of second-placed Plymouth Mayflower, after victories against Team Southampton and Yeovil at West Buckland School on Sunday.

Beach Academy took on Southampton in their first game and won 3-0 (25-14, 25-21, 25-17) before beating Yeovil by the same scoreline (25-21, 25-16, 25-16).

Captain Denise Austin said the team ethic has helped them earn results.

“Compared to where we were at the beginning of the season our ability to control games and go in quite forceful is good,” she said.

“Everyone is leading, there is no one waiting for someone else to take responsibility. We are all taking a shared responsibility for defensive and attacking plays – there is a real sense of teamwork.”

With Plymouth also winning both their games 3-0 – against Cardiff Celts and City of Bristol – Austin is aware Beach Academy have to maintain their 100% record.

“We have to (keep winning) in order to get promotion,” she said. “We can’t afford to slip up as that is the goal we are focused on.

“With that, each game has more pressure but we are quite happy to keep that on ourselves.”
