The Academy of Beach Sports Committee Members
The ABS committee consists of the following volunteers. As the structure for the club is that of a Limited Company, they are also the Directors of the Company.
Ian Huggins - Chair
I have been involved in volleyball for the last 8 years as parent and taxi. I took up the role of Chair in 2018 following from Denise Austin, the founder, and now Director of Beach Events. My background in business was seen as a necessity as the club transitioned to a Ltd Company status and gets on a more formal footing.
I look forward to building on the great work of Denise in the coming couple of years and working closely with all committee members in developing this great club.
Matt Rhymer - Head coach
As head coach, my role is to oversee the development of players and coaches in the club. I am proud to work alongside a group of excellent coaches, who have inclusivity, enjoyment and development as their core values.
I began coaching when I was 14, working with a local football club. At 17, I began coaching with the club and haven’t looked back since.
I am currently the Head Coach of the England Junior Women’s Beach Volleyball programme.
Michelle Davis - treasurer
My role within the club is Treasurer, I manage all the club’s income and expenditure throughout the year and produce year-end financial reports for our accountants.
I am also the one who sends out all invoices and chases payments, this role suits me as I work in an Accountants.
My daughter Ellie is a keen player within the club and as a family we enjoy travelling to the various competitions and supporting the players.
Christine Farr - Welfare officer
I have been involved in Volleyball for over eight years, mainly as a parent volunteer, following my daughter Helen through the ranks. I have in the past been a National League team manager for ABS and I hold a level one coaching qualification.
As the current Safeguarding officer, it is my role to ensure all the young people in our club are able to participate in a safe and positive environment. We all have responsibility to safeguard the welfare of our members and to protect them from poor practice, abuse and bullying. The Academy of Beach Sport follows Volleyball England Safeguarding Policies and Good Practice Guidance, with a view to actively promoting awareness on such matters. I am the first point of contact if anyone has any concerns about child protection and the club has developed procedures to manage referrals.
Jayne Hill - Senior Secretary
I am the club's Senior Secretary which involves organising training and events for our senior members. I have been involved in a variety of volunteer roles including school PTA’s and Manager of one of Barnstaple’s Junior Rugby teams. As a result I have a keen passion to enable children to learn and enjoy sport.
My background is in nursing which I did for 33 years before taking on a management and administration role in my husband’s business. My family (Terry, George and Kate) are active in volleyball which I join in with, along with playing netball
Becky Spencer - Youth Secretary
I am the club's Youth Secretary which involves organising training and events for our youth members.
On Saturday mornings during the indoor season you'll find me at our Under 15s session where I am the assistant coach.
Many of our players start their journey into volleyball at this session and it's brilliant watching them grow and develop into well rounded players. I also compete at both indoor and beach events.
